2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on The Brown Girl Bob: Soft Layers for Curls & Coils. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

📌 Pin Hair Guide
Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For 3A–3B curls, I keep the layers longer and softer, starting around the cheekbone to avoid too much volume at the sides. If your hair is fine, I add subtle internal layers to create lift without removing density. For 3C–4C coils, I go shorter in the back and leave the front slightly longer—this gives a flattering silhouette that doesn’t require daily styling.
Porosity matters too. High-porosity hair drinks up moisture but loses it quickly, so I recommend a leave-in with marshmallow root to seal the cuticle. Low-porosity hair needs lighter products like aloe vera gel to avoid buildup. Always adjust your styling cream to your hair’s thirst level, not just your curl pattern.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
