2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on The Romantic Low Chignon: A Botanical Updo for Date Nights & Weddings. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For my clients with wavy or curly hair, I adapt this chignon to celebrate their natural texture. Instead of brushing out the waves, I encourage a gentle finger-comb and let a few face-framing curls fall softly. This adds romantic movement and reduces the need for heat styling, which is always a win for scalp health.
If your hair is on the finer side, like many of my Parisian clients, I recommend a slight backcomb at the crown—done with a natural boar brush—to create volume without damaging the cuticle. For thicker, coarser hair, I’ll add a touch more argan oil and use a silk-wrapped elastic to avoid pulling. The key is always to listen to your hair’s porosity and adjust the botanical prep accordingly.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
