2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on Dimensional Chocolate Brown Layers With Amber Lowlights: A Botanical Gloss Guide. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For my low-porosity clients, I adjust the gloss by adding a touch of honey to help it penetrate the cuticle, and I always recommend a pre-wash oil treatment with jojoba to prep the hair. If your hair is high-porosity, I’d skip the honey and instead use a lighter chamomile infusion, rinsing with cool water to seal the cuticle and lock in the color.
For straight or fine hair, I keep the layers longer and the amber lowlights finer, so they peek through subtly as you move. For coily or curly textures, I place the lowlights in larger sections and let the natural curl pattern do the work—each twist catches the light differently, creating a multidimensional effect that’s truly unique to you.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
