2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on Curly Bob for Brown Skin: My Botanical Cut & Gloss Ritual. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
If your curls are tighter, say 4A, I’d keep the bob slightly longer at the nape to avoid the dreaded triangle effect. For looser waves, I’d add a few face-framing layers to encourage movement. The key is porosity: low-porosity hair needs lighter butters and a bit more steam to absorb moisture, while high-porosity hair drinks up richer formulas like shea and marshmallow root.
For a more dramatic look, I sometimes add a subtle undercut at the back—it’s a hidden detail that feels edgy but still professional. And if you’re experimenting with color, a henna gloss over dark brown hair gives a fiery auburn tint that shifts beautifully in sunlight, without damaging the cuticle.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
