2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on The Soft Layered Bob: A Curly Girl's Best-Kept Secret. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For low-porosity curls, keep the layers a bit longer and skip heavy butters—they can sit on the hair shaft and weigh it down. Stick to lightweight marshmallow root gel or aloe vera juice for definition. For high-porosity curls, add a few drops of jojoba oil to the rinse to seal moisture in and prevent the ends from drying out.
If you have wavy 2B hair, ask for longer, face-framing layers that start at the chin—it gives volume without losing length. For tighter 3C–4A coils, go for a rounded shape with more internal layers to reduce bulk and let the curls clump beautifully. The key is always cutting dry and shaping to your unique pattern.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
