2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on Brown Girl Curly Hair 2023: Botanical Gloss & Soft Layers. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For brown girls with low-porosity curls (2B–3A), the gloss can sit on the surface and look dull if you don’t warm it first. I always advise applying the hibiscus mixture to damp, warm hair—either after a steam towel or a quick warm rinse—and leaving it for 20 minutes under a shower cap. This opens the cuticle just enough to let the color and moisture sink in, giving you that glass-like shine without weighing down the curl.
If your curls are high-porosity (3C–4C), you’ll want to skip the heat and use a lighter gloss with more argan oil and less hibiscus. High-porosity hair drinks up color fast, so I recommend a 10-minute application and a cool rinse to seal the cuticle. For wavy brown girls (2A–2C), focus the gloss on the mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the roots to keep volume—this creates a subtle, sun-kissed effect that’s perfect for a natural, no-dye look.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
