2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on Curly Hair Color Gloss: 2023's Botanical Shine Ritual. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For low-porosity curls, the gloss can sit too heavily on the surface, so I always add a splash of apple cider vinegar to my infusion—it gently lifts the cuticle just enough to let the botanicals sink in. High-porosity coils, on the other hand, crave more sealing; I’ll swap the camellia oil for a heavier shea or mango butter blend to lock in moisture and color.
If your curls are loose waves (2B–2C), keep the gloss lighter—a simple chamomile tea rinse with a few drops of jojoba will do. For tight 4C coils, I recommend a pre-gloss protein treatment with rice water to strengthen the strand before the color-depositing step. That way, you get the shine without the fragility.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
