2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on Curly Hair Color Gloss: 2023's Prettiest Botanical Hair Designs. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For low-porosity curls, I dial back the water in my gloss mix and add a touch of aloe vera gel to help the color penetrate without sitting on top. High-porosity coils, on the other hand, soak up moisture fast, so I pre-treat with argan oil and use a richer hibiscus paste to lock in the hue.
If you have wavy 2B hair, a sheer gloss with a hint of rosehip oil gives that ‘glass hair’ effect without weighing down your waves. For tighter 4C textures, I recommend a two-step approach: a deep conditioning mask first, then a lightweight color glaze—this keeps the curls defined and the color vibrant, not dull.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
