2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on Soothing Itchy Scalp: Peppermint, Tea Tree & Niacinamide Serum. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For those with oily scalps, I recommend adding a few drops of rosemary essential oil to the serum—it helps regulate sebum production without drying out the skin. If your scalp is dry and flaky, swap the hydrosol for chamomile tea and increase the aloe vera gel to boost hydration. This flexibility makes the serum suitable for all hair types, from fine and straight to thick and coily.
When adapting for sensitive skin, reduce the tea tree to just a drop and focus on the niacinamide and aloe. For children or those with very reactive scalps, omit the tea tree entirely and use peppermint hydrosol alone—it’s still incredibly soothing. Remember, the goal is to calm, not overwhelm, so start with a lower concentration of active ingredients and build up as your scalp adjusts.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
