2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on Whisper-Light Internal Layers for Fine, Flat Hair Volume. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

📌 Pin Hair Guide
Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For fine, straight hair (1A–2A), keep the layers subtle and internal—think ‘whisper-light’—so you don’t lose density at the ends. If you have wavy or curly hair (2B–3B), you can go a bit bolder with the layers, but always cut on dry hair to see how each curl falls. The key is to remove weight from the inside, not the outside, so your natural movement shines.
For low-porosity hair, which tends to be more resistant to moisture, I add a lightweight botanical treatment like rosemary hydrosol to the cut—it preps the hair and adds a bit of grip for styling. Medium-porosity hair can handle a little more layering, but I still avoid thinning shears, which can create frizz. Always ask your stylist for a ‘soft layering’ approach—it’s the most flattering for fine textures.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
