2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on The Botanical Bob: My Soft-Layered Cut for Curly Hair. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For low-porosity hair, the cut stays the same, but I’d skip heavy butters and rely on a lightweight jojoba-based serum after washing. Low-porosity curls need slip, not saturation, so I’d add a few drops of rosemary hydrosol to reactivate the curl and seal with a tiny bit of shea butter on the ends only. That keeps the bob bouncy without weighing it down.
If your hair is high-porosity, like Elena’s, I’d layer in a protein-rich botanical rinse—think nettle or horsetail—once a week to strengthen the shaft. The cut angles stay soft, but I’d avoid razoring, which can fray already delicate strands. Instead, I use sharp shears and point-cut into the ends for a gentle, textured finish that prevents split ends from traveling up the curl.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
