Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For loose waves (2B–2C), I keep layers longer and use a lighter hand with oils, focusing on a water-based gel to avoid weighing down the pattern. For tighter coils (3C–4A), I cut shorter internal layers to release bulk and recommend a richer butter or cream to lock in moisture.
Porosity matters too—low porosity curls need warm water to open the cuticle and lightweight botanicals like aloe, while high porosity curls benefit from cool rinses and heavier sealing agents like shea or safflower oil. Adjust your routine seasonally: more moisture in humid months, more protein in dry winter air.

- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
