4. Long-Term Scalp Care, Glossing & Maintenance
Welcome to Part 4 of 4 of my guide on The Botanical Ponytail: A Protective Updo for Curly Hair. Keeping your cuticle glossy and your ends split-free between trims comes down to a few simple weekly habits.

Preserving Your Cuticle & Natural Shine
Long-term, your scalp needs breathing room. I advise my clients to wear the ponytail for no more than three days in a row, then switch to a loose braid or let hair down overnight. Massage your scalp with a few drops of jojoba oil before bed to stimulate circulation and prevent dryness at the roots.
At night, wrap your ponytail in a silk scarf or use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction. Every seven weeks, visit your stylist for a micro-trim to keep ends healthy—this prevents split ends from traveling up the shaft. And remember, a ponytail is a style, not a permanent state. Give your hair a weekly deep-conditioning mask with shea butter or honey to replenish moisture lost to styling.
