2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on 2023 Botanical Hair Color Rituals for Soft, Glossy Movement. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For my low-porosity clients—those with hair that repels water and feels dry despite heavy products—I swap the chamomile for a warm fenugreek infusion, which helps open the cuticle just enough to let moisture in. I also reduce the rosehip oil to a single drop, blended with a water-based leave-in, so it doesn’t sit on the surface and weigh the hair down.
If your hair is high-porosity and tends to frizz, I add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to the final rinse to seal the cuticle, and I use a wider angle on the layers to avoid too much feathering at the ends. For curly textures (2C–3B), I recommend cutting in dry, curl by curl, and using a flaxseed gel instead of a heavy cream—it gives definition and gloss without crunch.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
