2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on The Botanical Bob: A Soft Layered Cut for Curly Hair. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
If your hair is on the finer side, like 2A or 2B waves, I’d keep the layers longer and more subtle, just to add a bit of movement without sacrificing volume. For those with tighter curls, 3C or 4A, I’d go for a slightly longer bob, chin to collarbone, and use more aggressive layering on top to reduce bulk and let those curls spring up. The porosity matters too—low porosity hair needs more moisture, so I’d recommend a lighter leave-in to avoid weighing down the cut.
For high porosity hair, the bob can get frizzy fast, so I’d focus on sealing the ends with a few drops of jojoba oil after styling. And if you’re transitioning from straight to natural, this cut is perfect because it removes damaged ends while keeping the shape flexible. Just remember, the bob is a canvas—your curls are the art.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
