2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on Marshmallow Root Slip & Shingling for Juicy 3B–3C Curls. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For high-porosity curls like Amara’s, marshmallow root is a godsend because it fills the gaps in the cuticle, locking in moisture. If your hair is low porosity, you’ll want to warm the gel slightly before applying and use a steamer or warm towel to help it penetrate. In that case, I’d suggest a lighter hand with the jojoba and more aloe to keep things airy.
For wavy 2B–2C hair, skip the shingling and instead use a prayer-hand motion to smooth the gel over the surface. This prevents over-defining and keeps waves soft and beachy. And if you have 4A–4C coils, you can still use this method—just work in even smaller sections and follow with a curl cream for extra richness.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
