The Modern Curly Bob: A Soft, Botanical Cut for Natural Volume

2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture

Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on The Modern Curly Bob: A Soft, Botanical Cut for Natural Volume. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands

For wavy hair (2A–2B), I keep the bob slightly longer—just grazing the collarbone—and add subtle face-framing pieces that start at the cheekbone. This gives movement without sacrificing length, and it works beautifully with a gentle sea-salt spray for that effortless, beachy finish. If your waves are looser, avoid heavy layering on top; you want the cut to encourage your natural S-pattern, not chop it into frizz.

For tighter curls (3B–3C), I go shorter in the back and leave a bit more length in the front, creating a graduated bob that adds lift at the crown. The key is to cut each curl while it’s dry and fully coiled, so the shape is precise. I also recommend asking your stylist to point-cut the ends rather than blunt-cut—this prevents that dense, heavy bottom and lets your curls clump together naturally. And if you have low porosity hair, keep the layers minimal to avoid excess bulk that can make curls look flat.

🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide

  • Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
  • Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
  • High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
