2. Tailoring to Your Hair Porosity & Texture
Welcome to Part 2 of my guide on Weightless Butterfly Layers for Thick Wavy Hair: Air-Dry Salon Cut. Every head of hair absorbs moisture and holds movement differently—here is how I customize the formula and cut proportions in my studio.

📌 Pin Hair Guide
Matching Botanicals & Layers to Your Strands
For medium porosity waves (2B–2C), I keep the internal layers slightly longer to maintain density and avoid excessive feathering. If your hair is high porosity, I’d recommend shorter, more graduated butterfly layers to reduce weight and encourage curl formation—just be careful not to over-layer, or you’ll lose the soft, romantic shape. On the other hand, if your waves are loose and you want more volume, I’ll cut the top layer at a steeper angle to create a subtle ‘V’ at the back, which adds lift at the crown.
For those with fine, thick hair (lots of strands but thin diameter), I’d go with minimal internal layering and focus on face-framing pieces only. This prevents the ends from looking wispy. If you have coarse, very thick strands, I’d add more internal layers but keep them long—think 3 to 4 inches below the top layer—so the hair doesn’t bush out. Always ask your stylist for a dry cut after the initial wet cut to refine the shape and ensure the layers fall perfectly with your natural wave pattern.
🌿 Quick Porosity Match Guide
- Low Porosity & Fine Strands: Choose clarified herbal hydrosols (rosemary, nettle, peppermint) and airy internal layers.
- Medium Porosity & Wavy Textures: Balance lightweight aloe hydration with cold-pressed jojoba and point-cut movement.
- High Porosity & Curly Strands: Seal moisture with oat lipids, babassu butter, and flaxseed curl definition.
