4. Long-Term Scalp Care, Glossing & Maintenance
Welcome to Part 4 of 4 of my guide on Weightless Butterfly Layers for Thick Wavy Hair: Air-Dry Salon Cut. Keeping your cuticle glossy and your ends split-free between trims comes down to a few simple weekly habits.

Preserving Your Cuticle & Natural Shine
Long-term, I always tell my clients to protect their scalp microbiome by alternating their sulfate-free shampoo with a gentle co-wash once a week, especially if they use styling products. At night, sleep on a silk pillowcase and loosely twist your hair into a pineapple or a loose braid to prevent friction that can roughen the cuticle and disturb your wave pattern. This also helps maintain the shape of your butterfly layers between washes.
For salon touch-ups, I recommend a micro-trim every 8 weeks to keep the ends healthy and the layers from growing out into a heavy block. In the salon, I’ll refresh the shape with a quick dry trim and spritz a bit of chamomile hydrosol to revive the waves. If you notice your hair feeling dry, add a weekly botanical mask—like a mix of mashed avocado and honey—to nourish the strands without weighing them down. With this care, your butterfly layers will stay weightless, shiny, and full of life.
